Diego Luna Wiki Biography
Diego Luna-Alexander was born on the 29th December 1979, in Mexico City, Mexico, and is an actor, producer and director. Diego is most famous for his role in the critically acclaimed 2001 drama “Y Tu Mamá También”. He is also known for his appearances in “Rudo y Cursi” as well as in Hollywood’s blockbusters “The Terminal” (2004), “Milk” (2008), “Elysium” (2013), “Blood Father” (2016) and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016).
Have you ever wondered how much wealth this Mexican star actor has accumulated so far? How rich Diego Luna is? According to sources, it is estimated that the total amount of Diego Luna’s net worth, as of late 2016, is $4 million, acquired through his career in the moviemaking industry which has been active since 1982.
Diego Luna was born to Fiona Alexander, a costume designer, and Alejandro Luna a set designer, and is of Mexican and British descent. His mother died when Diego was just two months old, so he was raised by his father, one of Mexico’s most acclaimed theater, opera and movie set designers today. Due to the nature of his father’s job, Diego spent a great deal of time on various acting sets in his childhood, so it so no wonder that Diego Luna was attracted to acting from an early age.
Diego debuted as an actor in 1982, in an uncredited role in “Antonieta”, Carlos Saura’s drama. In 1991, he starred in the short movie ” El Último Fin de Año” (The Last New Year) which was followed by a more demanding role in the popular telenovela ” El Abuelo y Yo” in 1992. He got his first more notable role in 1995, when he starred as Quinque, a troubled son of Laura León’s character in the Mexican soap opera “El Premio Mayor”. Diego Luna’s acting career began rising rapidly and he caught the eye of several casting directors, which led him to more memorable and higher paid roles as well. All these acting engagements provided the basis for Diego Luna’s now quite respectable net worth.
In 1999, Diego Luna was cast in the leading role of Victor in musical drama “El Cometa” (The Comet). Subsequently he starred as Ramón, the main character of Gabriel Retes’ drama “Un Dulce Olor a Muerte” (A Sweet Scent of Death). These roles were followed by that of Carlos in Julian Schnabel’s drama “Before Night Falls” (2000), featuring Javier Bardem, Johnny Depp and Sean Penn in the leading roles. However, the real breakthrough in Luna’s acting career occurred in 2001 when he got one of the main roles – Tenoch Iturbide – in the critically acclaimed drama directed by Alfonso Cuarón – “Y Tu Mamá También”; the movie was a real commercial success with over $33.6 millions earned at the box office. This role brought him a huge dose of popularity as well as the Premio Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Actor. Besides ranking him among the international movie stars, it also helped Diego Luna to increase his overall wealth by a large margin.
With his career on the rise, Diego Luna began appearing in more and more Hollywood movies. In 2002, Diego starred opposite Salma Hayek and Geoffrey Rush in the biographical drama about Frida Kahlo simply named – “Frida”. In 2004 he played the role of Javier Suarez, one of the main protagonists of “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights”. Later that year, alongside Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Diego appeared in Steven Spielberg‘s comedy/drama “The Terminal”. In “Milk”, the 2008 biographical drama about Harvey Milk, an American gay activist, Diego Luna had the memorable role of Harvey’s emotionally unstable lover, Jack Lira. In 2013, Diego Luna appeared alongside Matt Damon in the Sci-Fi blockbuster “Elysium”. It is certain that all these roles dramatically increased the size the overall net worth of Diego Luna.
The most recent acting engagements of Diego Luna include the 2016 action thriller “Blood Father” with Mel Gibson in the leading role, as well as one of the year’s most anticipated movies – “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” in which Diego was cast as Captain Cassian Andor. A global opening weekend scheduled for the 16th December is expected to “crush” the box office with a sum estimated at $130 million. Doubtless these ventures have made a positive impact of Diego Luna’s overall net worth.
When it comes to his personal life, Diego Luna married fellow actor Camila Sodi in 2008, and with whom he has a son and a daughter, however, the marriage ended with a divorce in 2013.
Alongside his childhood friend Gael Garciá Bernal, also an actor, Diego Luna co-founded an organization and film festival – Ambulante A.C. whose goal is raising the popularity of documentaries. For their efforts, the organization was honored with Washington Office of Latin America Human Rights Award in 2011.

Diego Luna Quotes
- I thought I danced really well and everyone in Mexico did, but then we got here to Puerto Rico and I started to see everyone dancing and I got so depressed… I’ve been living a huge lie!
- When I was growing up in the theater, there were all these amazing girls telling me about the guy who broke their heart. And I was always wishing that it was me.
- If being a sex symbol means you have lots of sex, then I am glad to be a sex symbol. But in real life I’m not. That doesn’t happen.
- When I was really young I used to lie a lot. Now I get paid to do it. I find sides I don’t get to explore in real life. Like, I had to do a sex scene before I had sex. I was 13, 14, and it was my first love experience with 25 people in front of me. Acting is therapy. It keeps you in contact with your feelings.
- [when asked the most outrageous thing that’s happened to him since becoming famous] Meeting kids who have been named Diego because of me. It’s like [I want to say to the parents], “Oh, why are you doing that? If you’re my fan, it’s your problem, but it’s not your son’s problem!”.
- [when asked what the most important thing is in life] That’s easy: having someone to love and being loved. And having the chance to work with people I admire. Those are my priorities.
- [on Y Tu Mamá También (2001)] When you do something small but you put your whole heart into it, it can be very powerful. It can change your whole world. This movie made it possible for me to work in Spain and in Hollywood, and it brought me the attention to do interviews in a country that is not mine. I think one of the things that made the movie so successful here is that it’s not a movie that you can imagine being made in America.
- I’m a terrible dancer. I need to be really drunk and see a beautiful girl over there. It was a way of getting close to a girl without having to speak because always, whenever I opened my mouth, they would leave. So, dancing was a chance to keep them close.
- No, though, I’m not a dancer. I’m a one routine dancer. I can do what you see in the movie [Havana Nights], but if you ask me to do something else, it’d take me another two months.
- I didn’t go to university, and so, every time that I work, I’m looking for a teacher in a way. I’m looking for people that I can learn from and to have the chance to work with people that I admire.
- [on Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001)] That was the greatest movie that I’ve been in so far and the one I love the most, I had the chance to work with my best friend and a director that I admire a lot. I won a lot confidence in my work after that.
- [on living in Mexico] I still have my house in Mexico City. In fact, when I’m there, I perform in a play called The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. Whenever I have a chance, I go to Mexico to be in it. This year has been a bit crazy for me. I haven’t been in my country at all.
- [on Hollywood] This is the place where they make the most movies and I want to work here. But I don’t have this feeling like, oh, I want to live in the United States and make movies and become famous just because the money is here. I like to make movies that tell stories that I care about. I wish someday that a movie like Y Tu Mama could be made in America.
- [on ideal women] Someone who surprises me, someone who makes me laugh, and someone who has her own life and wants to share that with me. I hate those relationships where someone is just following the other person around, you know?
