Dean L. Kamen was born on the 5 April 1951 in Long Island, New York City USA, and is an inventor and entrepreneur probably mostly known for his invention of Segway, which has probably had the biggest impact on his total net worth.
So, just how rich is Dean Kamen? Well, as of early 2016, the American’s net worth is estimated by sources to be over $500 million, the larger part of his wealth having come from his inventions and investments. He owns companies and holds more than 440 patents, which have added substantially to his overall wealth. Besides that, he owns three helicopters, a private jet, and a small island that produces its own electricity using wind. He has a big hexagonal, shed style mansion in New Hampshire with many unique features, many of which are his inventions, and even has a hangar built into it. Concerning his helicopters, he likes them so much, that he even bought a company that manufactures them, so he can upgrade them.
He spent his childhood in Long Island – he did not do well in school, but he started earning from his inventions at a very young age, apparently as much as $60,000 while he was still in high school. He went to Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts but did not graduate. He started his own company AutoSyringe in 1976, when he invented the first drug infusion pump. In 1989, he founded FIRST, a program to get people interested in science. He also invented the Segway PT, an electric self-balancing human transporter, and his company DEKA is currently working on inventions based on solar power. Among his 440 patents are iBot electric wheelchair which can go over any terrain and climb stairs; a portable dialysis machine; artificial robotic limbs and a water purification system. He also co-invented a compressed air device that can lift a human into the air in order to quickly access the roofs of tall, unreachable buildings. He has received numerous awards, among which are a National Medal of Technology and Global Humanitarian Action Award. In 2005, he was elected into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. He has also received numerous honorary doctorate degrees. In 2010, he appeared in a TV show “Dean of Invention”, in which his correspondent and he investigated new technologies. He was subsequently elected into the USA Science and Engineering Festival’s Advisory Board.
Concerning his private life, he is known to be a very reserved person and hardly ever talks about his personal life in his media interviews. He is not married and has no children, so his work seems to be his life. Kamen’s parents live near him. He also has an older brother. He is known to be a very good employer, having absorbed the cost of the financial crisis in order for his employees not to suffer. Dean Kamen is called a modern day Thomas Edison. He is even the main topic of a nonfiction narrative book about his inventions.
