Dana is a daughter of stage actress Joyce McCord, and Rebert Weeks Barron, who is the founder of the Weist-Barron School of Television. She grew up in New York City with her sister Allison, who is also an actress.

When Allison was 11, she started doing commercials and Dana wanted the same – she was 10 years old – and thanks to her father’s influence in the entertainment world, she also featured in several commercials. Three years later she made her breakthrough with the role of Audrey Griswold in the comedy adventure “National Lampoon’s Vacation”, and then she was selected for the role of Eleanor in the TV series about Swiss folk hero Willem Tell, entitled “Crossbow” (1987-1989), which only increased her net worth. Before the ‘80s ended, Dana also appeared in the romantic comedy “Heartbreak Hotel” (1988), starring David Keith, Tuesday Weld, and Charlie Schlatter – her net worth was well established.
