Cary Fukunaga Wiki Biography

Cari Joji Fukunuga, born on the 10th of July, 1977, is an American writer, director and cinematographer who gained fame through his films “Sin Nombre” and “Jane Eyre”, and also in the HBO television series “True Detective”.

So how much is Fukunuga’s net worth? As of late 2017, based on authoritative sources it is reported to be over $2 million, acquired from his years working in the film and television industry which began in the early 2000s.

Born in Almeda, California, Fukunuga is the son of Anthony Shuzo and Gretchen May Grufman. His father was of Japanese-American descent, and later worked at the University of California, Berkley. His mother on the other hand is of Swedish-American descent, who worked as a history college instructor and also a university assistant professor. She was originally a dental hygienist.

During his younger years, Fukunuga planned to be a professional snow boarder, but later decided that he wanted a career in film. He attended the University of California, Santa Cruz graduating with a degree in history, an interest he got from his mother. He also attended Institut d’études politiques (IEP) de Grenoble, and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Film Program.

Fukunuga broke into the film industry while he was still in NYU – his short film “Victoria Para Chino” which he wrote and directed in 2004, aired at the Sundance Film Festival, and received a Student Academy Award, and received various accolades including Best Student Film award at the Ashland Independent Film Festival in 2006, Best Short Film and an Audience Award for Best Short Film at the Gen Art Film Festival in 2005, and a BAFTA/LA Award for Excellence-Honorable Mention award at the Aspen Shortfest in 2005 to name a few.

After the success of “Victoria Para Chino”, he also made other short films including “Kofi” and a segment in the film “Chinatown Film Project”. His early years as a writer and director helped set up his career and also his net worth.

In 2009, Fukunuga made his first feature film entitled “Sin Nombre”, which he wrote and directed, and again received numerous awards and positive reviews – the film about a Honduran teen who’s looking for a better life received accolades including Best Foreign Film award at the Austin Film Critics Association and the Florida Film Critics Circle Award, to name a few. Fukunuga himself also received awards including a New Director’s Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, and a Directing award at the Sundance Film Festival both in 2009.

Another film that Fukunuga made which received a lot of praise is “Jane Eyre” starring Judi Dench and Michael Fassbender, recognized at the Academy Awards for its costume design, and multiple recognitions in various other award-giving bodies. The success of his films also helped tremendously with his wealth.

Aside from his thriving career in film, Fukunuga also made his mark in television with the HBO series “True Detective” – he directed all of the episodes during the show’s first season that earned him Outstanding Director at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Fukunuga may be more known as writer/director, but has also done plenty of work behind the camera, working as a cinematographer on the films “Handmade”, “Sikumi”, and “Team Queen” to name a few. He also worked as a camera operator in the movie “Glory at Sea” and as a gaffer in the short film “Just Make Believe”. His various roles behind the camera have also helped his career and net worth.

Today, Fukunuga is still active in creating movies – he recently directed and wrote the movie “Beasts of No Nation” starring Idris Elba, and will also be working in the series “Maniac” which will be released on Netflix.

In terms of his personal life, Fukunuga is apparently still single – there aren’t even any rumours of romantic liaisons.
