Bob Huggins grew up in Port Washington, Ohio and played basketball at the Indian Valley South High School, leading his team to a 26-0 record. He transferred from Ohio University to the West Virginia after a year, and played point guard for the Mountaineers from 1975 to 1977. Huggins never made it to the NBA, but following his unsuccessful tryout with the Philadelphia 76ers, he became the temporary assistant coach at West Virginia University.
From 1978 to 1980, Bob served as an assistant at Ohio State, but then got his first head coach job at the Walsh University in 1980. Huggins had great results during his three-year stay at the Walsh, which was a solid recommendation for him to move to the Central Florida as an assistant. From 1984 to 1989, Bob was a head coach at the Akron University and had a 97–46 record, including three playoff appearances.
Huggins joined Cincinnati in 1989, trying to restore their former glory, and after two seasons without success, Bob managed to get them into the playoffs in 1991, and oldl continue doing that for the next 14 seasons – Huggins had an impressive 399–127 (.759) record during his 16-year tenure at the Cincinnati, and mentored several great players including three consensus All-Americans, Danny Fortson, Kenyon Martin, and Steve Logan. He won the C–USA Tournament championship on four occasions (1996, 1998, 2002, and 2004), which resulted in winning the C–USA Coach of the Decade Award in 2005. In August 2005, Bob decided to accept a $3 million buyout after the UC President Nancy L. Zimpher issued him an ultimatum, apparently as a consequence of a DUI charge which reflected on the reputation of the university..
Huggins took a one-year break from coaching, but returned to work at Kansas State University in March 2006. However, he failed to take the Wildcats to the NCAA tournament, so in April 2008, Bob moved to his alma mater West Virginia University, signing a deal that guaranteed him $800,000 in the first year. He won the Big East Tournament in 2010 after defeating Cincinnati, Notre Dame, and Georgetown in the finals. Most recently, Huggins won the Jim Phelan Award (2015), and was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year (2015).
Throughout his long career, Huggins appeared in a total of 23 NCAA Tournaments, including two Final Four appearances in 1992 and 2010., and is only one of ten coaches with an 800-plus victories record.
