Ava DuVernay Wiki Biography

Ava Duvernay was born on the 24th August 1972, in Long Beach, California USA, and is an award-winning director, screenwriter, producer, marketer and film distributor, but probably best known for her Oscar-nominated drama film “Selma” (2014). Her career on film started in 2008, when she directed the documentary “This Is Life”.

Have you ever wondered how rich Ava Duvernay is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that de Duvernay’s net worth is as high as $3 million, an amount earned through her successful career in the film industry.

Ava Duvernay was born in Long Beach, but raised in Lynwood, California. During her childhood, she also spent a lot of time near Selma, Alabama, where her father, Murray Maye, was born. Duvernay was raised by her father, who owned a carpeting business. Having finished Saint Joseph High School, she enrolled at the University of California, where she majored with a double degree in English and African American studies. Her first love was journalism, and she worked as an intern for CBS News for a time, covering the O. J. Simpson trial. However, she later moved to marketing and public relation, having grown disillusioned with journalism. She founded her own public relations firm, The Duvernay Agency, which focused on movie marketing, specifically for African American audiences. Having spent so much time around the film industry at this point, Duvernay became inspired to make her own films.

Her directorial debut, “This Is Life” (2008), revolved around alternative hip-hop artists, reflecting Duvernay’s long lasting love of hip-hop. She continued in the same direction with her second directorial piece, “My Mic Sounds Nice: The Truth About Women in Hip Hop” (2010), and in the same year, she finally make a breakthrough into feature film, when she directed and wrote the independent drama film “I Will Follow” (2010), which starred Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Beverly Todd, and Omari Hardwick; the film was praised by the critics, especially by the noted film critic, the late Roger Ebert. Her second film, “Middle of Nowhere” (2012) earned a spot at the Sundance Film Festival; it was another independent feature, starring Emayatzy Corinealdi, David Oyelowo, Omari Hardwick and Lorraine Toussaint. It earned the Directing Award for US Dramatic Film at Sundance.

Duvernay’s next feature film put her on the map as one of the most promising newcomers. In 2014, she directed a historical drama film entitled “Selma”, which told the story of the Civil Rights Movement, including the 1965 protest marches from Selma to Montgomery, led by Martin Luther King, Jr. The film featured a stellar cast, including David Oyelowo as Dr. King, then Tom Wilkinson, Tim Roth, Carmen Ejogo, and the rapper Common. The film was nominated for several Golden Globe and Academy Awards, winning both for Best Original Song.

Continuing her rise to prominence as one of the leading voices for African American rights in Hollywood, she next directed the documentary “13th” (2016), which opened the New York Film Festival. The documentary revolves around school-to-prison pipeline, and mass incarceration of African American men, within the USA prison-industrial complex, and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2017 Academy Awards.

Confirming her newly-acquired status in Hollywood, Duvernay was in talks to direct “Black Panther”, the new superhero entry in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. However, she decided to adapt the classic children’s novel, “A Wrinkle In Time” instead; the film is scheduled to release in 2018.

Duvernay supports African American writes, and she is a founder of AFFRM, the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement, meant to uplift the voices of black people. She will go down in history as the first African American woman to win the Best Director Prize at Sundance Film Festival, as well as first black female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

When it comes to her personal life, and relationships, Ava has been spotted with actor and rapper Common.

Ava DuVernay Quotes

  • [on filming ‘Selma’ in the same area of Alabama where she grew up] I never approached it as, ‘Oh my God, I’m making a film about Mr. King’. I just focused on making a film about an ordinary man doing extraordinary things in a place I know very well.
  • We’re told that independent film lovers… folks that are used to watching art house films, won’t come out and see a film with black people in it – I’ve been told that in rooms, big rooms, studio rooms, and I know that’s not true.
  • Positive characterizations are complex characterizations. That’s all we need to know. They shouldn’t be saccharine. They shouldn’t feel like medicine.
  • I didn’t go to film school. I got my education on the set as a niche publicist in the film industry.
  • You know, often films that are deemed positive, nobody wants to see them.
  • I tell the stories that are of interest to me.
  • I think that women definitely have a special bond as friends that is hard to describe to men, and we don’t often see that portrayed narratively.
  • I think for female filmmakers a big issue is making their second and third films.
  • I just don’t think there’s a lot of support for the woman’s voice in cinema, and it becomes really difficult to raise that money and start again every time.
  • I really admire Werner Herzog and Spike Lee. They’re amazing documentarians. If you took away all the narratives, they’d just be amazing documentarians.
  • I think good publicists are just like good mommies – always looking out, making sure folks are comfortable and making sure that folks are on time and making sure that folks are getting what they need and know what they need to do.
  • I’ve been to Sundance eight times as a publicist and thought I was very prepared. I mean, who could’ve been more prepared for me? A publicist who’s been there eight times. Getting there as a filmmaker was a completely surreal, different, unexpected experience.
  • As long as you’re in an environment where the worth of the project isn’t based on the project but what its predecessors did, it’s not truly inclusive.
  • I didn’t start out thinking that I could ever make films. I started out being a film lover, loving films, and wanting to have a job that put me close to them and close to filmmakers and close to film sets.
  • I make films about black women and it doesn’t mean that you can’t see them as a black man, doesn’t mean that he can’t see them as a white man or she can’t see them as a white woman.
  • I don’t understand the iPhone. I just don’t get it. Don’t ya’ll have to write serious emails throughout the day? How can you possibly manage detailed missives on a phone with no keys?
  • All the traditional models for doing things are collapsing; from music to publishing to film, and it’s a wide open door for people who are creative to do what they need to do without having institutions block their art.
  • I think that if we really want to break it down, that non-black filmmakers have had many, many years and many, many opportunities to tell many, many stories about themselves, and black filmmakers have not had as many years, as many opportunities, as many films to explore the nuances of our reality.
  • Filmmakers need to realize that their job isn’t done when they lock picture. We must see our films through.
  • All the films I do, I write the scripts, I direct.
  • I wish I could be the black woman Soderbergh, and put the camera on my shoulder and shoot beautifully while I directed.
  • In documentaries, there’s a truth that unfolds unnaturally, and you get to chronicle it. In narratives, you have to create the situations so that the truth will come out.
  • I think I am a little jealous of women who have great girlfriends as adults.
  • If you’re doing something outside of dominant culture, there’s not an easy place for you. You will have to do it yourself.
  • I’m a prison abolitionist because the prison system as it is set up is just not working. It’s horrible.
  • When I’m marketing a film, whether its mine or someone else’s, I work with a great deal of strategy and elbow grease until the job is done.
  • Film school was a privilege I could not afford.
  • Be passionate and move forward with gusto every single hour of every single day until you reach your goal.
