So just how rich was King Abdullah? The authoritative Forbes magazine has conservatively estimated that the net worth of the King was as much as $18 billion, which would have ranked him the third wealthiest head of state in the world.

Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was born to parents Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, in 1932 the founder and first monarch of Saudi Arabia and Fahda bint Al Asi Al Shuraim, the daughter from the powerful Shammar tribe. His mother passed away when Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was just six years old. He began his career by serving as the Mayor of Mecca in 1961 in the position of commander of Saudi National Guard in 1963. In 1975, he rose to the position of the second deputy prime minister. After the death of the King Khalid in 1982, Abdullah became the Crown Prince, but maintained his position of strength as head of the Nation Guard. In 2005, he was enthroned as King of Saudi Arabia on King Faud’s death, a position he had held de facto since his father’s serious stroke in 1995. King Abdullah ruled the country during the years of global recession which conversely increased his net worth considerably, as oil was still in demand and Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest exporter.

King Abdullah’s reign was notable for an element of international liberalisation, including becoming more engaged politically and economically with major world powers, but also maintaining Saudi influence in the Muslim world. The country became a member of the World Trade Organisation, and the G20 group of the world’s largest economies. The King was instrumental in formulating a peace initiative between Israel and arab/Muslim countries following the 9/11 attacks on the US.

Domestically, King Abdullah encouraged men and women to study abroad. The judiciary was reformed and reviewed, and small business encouraged with the elimination of red tape. These initiatives also reduced considerably any likely influence of radical religious elements, both internally and around the middle east. The King’s policies were such that in 2012, he was number four on the list of 500 most influential Muslims and seventh on the list of the World’s most powerful people made by Forbes magazine.

The King was also known for his philanthropic acts, such as supporting the establishment of libraries in Morocco, donating millions to the United Nations World Food Programme, funding of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and other projects. Consequently King Abdullah received a number of international honours, orders and awards.

Concerning the private life of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, he is known to have been married some 30 times, and fathered about 35 children. As is Saudi custom, many of his offspring have been appointed to positions of authority and influence, for example at present his second son named Prince Mutaib serves in the position of the minister of the National Guard. Another son, Prince Mishaal governs the territory of Makkah Province. However, only a few daughters of Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud have semi-public roles. One of them is Princess Adila, who declared women’s right to drive.

At the age of 90, the king Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud died of pneumonia.
