Randall Stuart Newman Wiki Biography

Randall Stuart Newman was born on the 28th November 1943, in Los Angeles, California, USA of Jewish ancestry, and is a composer, arranger, singer and pianist, being mostly known as a film score composer. He is the winner of two Oscars for the Best Original Score and Song, although he’s been nominated in the above mentioned categories over twenty times. Randy is also the winner of six Grammy Awards, three Emmy Awards as well as others. He is an inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Randy Newman has been active in the music industry since 1961.

How rich is the composer? It has been reported by authoritative sources that the outright size of Randy Newman’s net worth is as much as $50 million, as of the data presented in the middle of 2016. Music and song writing are the main sources of Newman’s wealth.

To begin with, Newman was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a graduate from University of California, Los Angeles.

Concerning his professional career, Newman began writing songs at the age of 17; then, he signed a contract as a singer with the company Reprise Records. He was a member (for a short period of time) of the band The Tikis, which was renamed Harpers Bizarre. In this group, Newman offered some of his compositions such as “Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear” and “Happyland”. His solo self-titled debut album entered the Billboard Top 200 in 1968. Moreover, many artists like Alan Price, Judy Collins, The Everly Brothers, Dusty Springfield, Pat Boone and Peggy Lee performed his songs. In 1970, Harry Nilsson recorded an album of Newman compositions called “Nilsson Sings Newman”. That album was a success, and paved the way for the next album of Newman entitled “12 Songs” (1970), acclaimed by critics, but the themes of his songs (racism, sexism, violence and other problems of society) did not bring the album great commercial success. In 1972, he released his album “Sail Away”, which also entered the Billboard Top 200. In later years he produced albums like “Good Old Boys” (1974), which peaked in the 36th position on the Billboard Top 200, and subsequently eight more studio albums including “Little Criminals” (1977) with appeared in 9th position on Billboard, and “The Randy Newman Songbook Vol. 2” (2011) which contained old songs and others.

Newman’s work as a film composer began in 1971, when he composed the music for the film of Norman Lear – “Cold Turkey”. He returned to work for the cinema in 1981 when he composed the music for the film “Ragtime”, for which he was nominated for two Academy Awards. Then, he was again nominated by the Academy for his song “There Is A Friend In Me” for the film “Toy Story” (1995). After 15 nominations for Academy Awards he won the award for the Best Song “If I Did Not Have You” piece for the film “Monsters, Inc.” (2001). In 2011, he won his second Oscar for “We Belong Together” theme composed for “Toy Story 3”. To conclude, all the above mentioned engagements have added sums to the total size of Randy Newman net worth.

Finally, in the personal life of the composer, Newman has married twice. His first wife was Roswitha Schmale (1967 – 1985) with whom he has three children. Since 1990, he has been married to Gretchen Preece, and they have two children.

Randall Stuart Newman Quotes

  • Thank God for the potholes on memory lane.
  • [on the underestimated value of compact discs and record stores, eclipsed by MP3’s and the Internet] Did you ever try to autograph an I-Pod? I tried, once… which, for me, was plenty.
  • [on the Bush administration] The US and the world just didn’t deserve these people. They’re a good deal worse. They don’t even know the rules.
  • My music has a high irritation factor. I’ve always tried to say something. Eccentric lyrics about eccentric people. Often it was a joke. But I would plead guilty on the grounds that I prefer eccentricity to the bland.
